Free Agent Draft Salary Proposal March 24, 2019 Christopher Culler Black Hills Phoenix
Current Rule 14.1 - A player's initial salary is determined by the manner in which the player was acquired. Players acquired through the Free Agent draft are assigned an option year salary as follows:
Round 1: $10 million Rounds 2: $7.5 million Rounds 3-4: $5 million Rounds 5-6: $4 million Rounds 7-8: $3 million Rounds 9-12: $2 million Rounds 13-16: $1 million Rounds 17-20: $500K Rounds 21-24: $300K Rounds 25+: $100K
Proposed Change: 14.1: A player's initial salary is determined by the manner in which the player was acquired. Players acquired through the Free Agent draft are assigned an option year salary as follows. This salary will decrease with each pick in every round. Using the current rules round starting salary.
Explanation: The idea of each round in free agency being the same is not fair to everyone. The better players should be more expensive then 24th best in a round. For example, round 1 is 10 million. The top pick is the same as the 24th pick. As you go into later rounds you have 48 picks and then 72 picks of the same salary. The quality level decreases with each pick and with each round. A team paying the same salary for a player of quality and level that is the same 24,48 or72 picks later should be exponentially different.
Implementation: I have created an Excel spreadsheet that has been set up through round 30 with even breakdowns per round and per pick. This spreadsheet can be added to the end of the KRFL spreadsheet. This file could be filled out per round and when needed, sorted by team very simply. Then a copy and paste to the respective team’s roster is simple. This file could also be placed into a Google Sheet or shared so everyone could view it at any time.
This Spreadsheet can be updated as needed to work with the Roster sheet. I am willing to volunteer to help in any way.
Thank you for your consideration of this proposal.
I do agree with the statement that the 1st player chosen in the round should be more expensive than 24 player chosen. But I think that is only true beyond for the first round or two. Beyond that the salary difference is not that significant. Plus, this proposal would require way to much work for whoever is maintaining the salary worksheet.
So if we were to go to something like this, I would suggest it be done for rounds 1 & 2 only and then simply reduce the salary by $100,000 each pick (see below). As it is proposed, this would be way to much administrative work, and so I cannot support it as it.
my problem with this is that it seems to hurt the weaker teams.... example, a weaker rebuilding team(#1) has to pay $10mil for a player; the KRFL champ(#24) only has to pay $7.7 for a player in the 1st round....
as an alternative; what if the first player taken in round one is $10.0, the second player taken(regardless of draft spot) is $9.9, third player taken is $9.8, etc.... and similarly for round 2, first player taken in round is $7.5, the second player taken(regardless of draft spot) is $7.4 etc

It obviously would only be for the first two rounds; after that too many players taken per round and not enough differentiation from 1st to 24th to have different amounts....
I'm not sure this idea is worth the bookkeeping effort involved seeing how less than half the league makes picks in the first two rounds. If it does get support, I prefer it to be with Mark B's addendum:
the first player taken in round one is $10.0, the second player taken(regardless of draft spot) is $9.9, third player taken is $9.8, etc....
I am asking all owners to consider this rule. I see some owners are against this. Why? I am still lost on the reasons but for bookkeeping. Which with a spreadsheet set up nicely and drop downs it is fast. I have rau numerous league caps although baseball with minors using this.
My main reason for this rule is to pay the same price at the top of a round then at the bottom is not fair not anyone. Is the quality the same at the top and bottom? Then as the later rounds it really opens up when a player that is drafted 4 rounds later is the same price?
How is that possible? Each player should be different.
Thank you everyone. I am passionate about leagues I play in and fairness.
I can provide the spreadsheet I created instead of looking at the dropbox file
Chris, I don't know of anyone besides me who has expressed a little concern about the impact of this rule proposal so I think you'll get a fair vote from the members. An additional issue occurs to me, however. On average, only about seven owners draft each year in the $10m round. Those with the early (lottery picks) will be paying top dollar while those at the lower end will be getting relative bargains. The number one pick costs $10m. The number twenty-four pick costs $7.7m. That's a $2.3m difference between the choice for one of the four worst teams in the league vs. the Super Bowl Champion. If all twenty-four teams were drafting in the first round, your idea of relative value would be an appropriate improvement but since only a handful do actually draft there, I worry about the rich simply getting richer (that is getting extra value for a first round player). Because of that, I suggest that you amend your proposal to include MarkB's idea which would work against my hesitation.
Im ok with Mark Blume’s compromise. But I’m not in favor of the previous winner getting an advantage in salary. I think we are all passionate about this league, which is the only league I play in. This league has a long standing history of participates who are dedicated. I’m looking forward to another great year.
